Should You Offer Cash on Delivery in the UAE?

800website builds e-commerce sites in Dubai. Cash on delivery is one of the few genuinely regional decisions in an online store.

Should I offer cash on delivery in the UAE?

Usually yes, at least at launch. A meaningful share of UAE shoppers still prefer paying on receipt, particularly for first orders from a brand they do not know, and it costs almost nothing to enable.

The trade-offs are real and worth pricing in. COD orders have higher refusal rates — customers who change their mind at the door — which means you pay for delivery on goods that come back. It ties up cash while orders are in transit, and reconciling collected cash is administrative work.

The pragmatic approach most UAE stores land on: offer COD, but add a small fee to cover the risk, and cap it by order value. High-value items are where refusals hurt most.

Does offering COD reduce card payments?

Somewhat, and that is not necessarily a loss. Some customers who would have paid by card will choose COD when it is available. But for a new brand, COD often converts customers who would otherwise not have bought at all — the alternative is not a card payment, it is no order.

As trust builds, card share rises naturally. Many stores find COD share falls over the first year without changing anything, simply because repeat customers stop hesitating.

Watch the numbers rather than guessing: if COD refusal rates climb above a level you can absorb, restrict it by order value or by area rather than removing it entirely.

How do I set up shipping for a UAE online store?

Four decisions, and getting them explicit prevents most checkout abandonment:

  • Zones. Dubai, other emirates, GCC, international — each with its own rate. Same-day within Dubai is a genuine competitive advantage if you can offer it.
  • Rate model. Flat rate is simplest and most predictable for customers. Weight-based is fairer on mixed baskets. Free over a threshold reliably increases average order value.
  • Carrier. Local couriers for within-UAE, international carriers beyond. Many integrate with WooCommerce for live rates and tracking.
  • Delivery time, shown before checkout. Not after.

The single biggest cause of abandoned carts is a shipping cost revealed at the final step. Show it on the product page or in the cart, not at payment.

What about returns?

Publish a clear returns policy and link it from the product page and the checkout. In a market where a lot of buying is from brands people have not used before, a visible returns policy does more for conversion than most design work.

Decide who pays return shipping and say so plainly. Ambiguity here produces disputes and negative reviews, both of which cost more than the postage.
